How Can I Help?
Asking for help for such sensitive needs can be hard. You can email, text, or call Dr. Rachel if you have questions about whether you’re in the right place. You will see only Dr. Rachel, and so no need to feel embarrassed or judged! You can schedule here, and Dr. Rachel will send you intake forms ahead of the appointment to best serve you on the first day.
Black Mountain Pelvic Health is 100% cash-based clinic, which means that Dr. Rachel has the flexibility and privilege to spend as much time 1-on-1 time as you need and costs are clear up front. High deductible insurance plans dictate what PT charges, and can leave you with surprise bills after the fact; we avoid this!
We provide a superbill that you can turn in to your insurance provider if you have great out-of-network benefits so that you can be directly reimbursed.
1st Visit
Comfortable, Affirming, Doable
At your first visit, you and Dr. Rachel will talk through what brings you to the clinic, history of that problem, and what goals you may have. Dr. Rachel will ask you questions, likely about bladder, bowel, sex, and orthopedic issues, as well as what exercise you like/do, who is in your life, and what makes you tick! You may have an examination of your pelvic floor on this 1st visit, if appropriate, or this can be delayed. You will certainly leave this visit armed with confidence that you can get better, and an idea of how we will get there! Evaluations are scheduled for an hour.
Follow-Ups
Confidence Boosted
Dr. Rachel often sees patients weekly or every other week for the course of treatment. You and she will together come up with a plan that works for your schedule, your finances, and your personality. Some people need more accountability, contact, and/or hands-on skills, while others need more direction and consultation to do more of it on their own. Each follow-up appointment is scheduled for an hour.
The length of time that it takes to get better varies! At the end of your first session, Dr. Rachel will estimate the length of time she thinks it will take to get you to where you want to be!
“Rachel Butler, DPT is an absolute gem in pelvic health! Her expertise, compassion, and approachability make every visit empowering” — Cindy
FAQs
What is “pelvic” physical therapy?
Pelvic PT is a specialized type of PT that takes into account the muscles, nerves, and tissues that are in the pelvis and pelvic floor AS WELL AS everywhere else. Pelvic PT’s have additional skills in evaluating and treating internally (vaginally/rectally) as well as externally, treating pregnant/postpartum individuals, & taking into account bladder, bowel, & sexual function. There are varying degrees of expertise among pelvic physical therapists, & finding one who has expertise in your particular concern(s) is vital. Rachel has more than 18 years of experience as a pelvic health physical therapist, & has built a reputation around seeing complicated & rare cases.
Do I have to get a pelvic exam?
Absolutely not! There are many ways to assess the pelvic floor function without directly looking at it or touching it. You will be given options and educated on the pros and cons of each, and you can make an informed decision as to if you want to include a pelvic exam in your evaluation and treatment.
What if I live outside of North Carolina?
Rachel is licensed as a Doctor of Physical Therapy in the state of North Carolina, & therefore is only able to provide physical therapy evaluations & treatment if you physically present in North Carolina. If you do not live in NC, Rachel is still available for pelvic coaching & consulting services, which are intended to provide education & general guidance on pelvic & sexual health concerns. She may have you see a PT that is local to you for hands-on care, in consultation with her.
